Aldenham students scoop a medley of medals at The English Schools Championships
It is a great honour for any athlete to be selected to represent their county at the English Schools’ Championships, and for one school to have no fewer than three athletes in the team is indeed a great achievement. Athletes have automatic entry once they achieve National standard and are considered for the team if they have the English Schools’ entry standard.
16 year old Toni Ademuwagun was given automatic entry in the High Jump. Tom Wright, also 16, had automatic entry standard in both the Long Jump and the High Jump and was selected for the High Jump as he had a higher UK ranking in that event. Milly Gall, who is 14, had National standard in both Hurdles and Long Jump so had the choice of which event to enter as her UK rankings were very similar, she chose the Long Jump. All three athletes had already won their individual events at the County Schools’ Championships.
The three Aldenham pupils travelled to Birmingham on the Hertfordshire team bus for the English Schools’ Championships. Tom was up first jumping an impressive 1.89m and narrowly missing his personal best of 1.92m. He came 7th in a strong field of U17 boys and is currently ranked 11th in the UK for his age group.
Milly managed to win the U15 girls Long Jump with a PB of 5.67m so gaining the title of English Schools Champion. Her jump also places her 1st in the UK rankings for her age group.
Toni cleared 2m for only the second time ever and then went on to gain a fantastic PB of 2.03m. He was placed 5th in the U20 competition. Toni is currently ranked 7th in the UK for his age group.
Well done to all three athletes who represented their school and County extremely well.
