Aldenham School, Founded 1597

International Students

We welcome international students, boys and girls, of all nationalities and faiths.

A number of international boarders join the School each year and take up the full boarding option. The closeness of the School to Heathrow, Luton, City and Stansted airports (all can be reached in under one hour), but also central London is a major attraction (25 mins).

Aldenham also has a more relaxed weekend than some boarding schools, with no Saturday School. Instead, there is time to relax with friends, pop into nearby Watford or London, and to take some time to focus on independent study.

A high priority is placed on pastoral care at Aldenham, to ensure pupils flourish and realise their academic and personal potential.

Each year a number of international students join us from a host of countries including Germany, Spain, Denmark, Nigeria, Ghana, Russia, China, Hong Kong, Korea and Japan. We cap our overseas numbers at 8% of our total student body. Students can join any year group, dependent on availability.

Future Pathways

The majority of our long term international students share the objective of completing A level courses as a pathway to UK universities. Each year we have international pupils who achieve places at Oxbridge and other red brick universities. Some do return to university in their own country, and some choose to study in the USA.

Any international student wishing to be considered for a place at Aldenham must have a good command of the English Language in order to progress with the curriculum, GCSE and A Level courses. Some students may wish to spend a term at an International Language School in England to improve their English prior to joining us. Others may wish to join us a term earlier (dependent on availability) for a settling-in period in order to improve their English, make new friends and experience a different culture.

Prospective candidates who wish to be considered for entry to Aldenham are required to send a letter of introduction and complete a Registration Form in the first instance. Students from mainland China should apply via our agents (please see the bottom of this page).

The Head, likes to meet all candidates for an interview at the School. This gives the candidate the opportunity to become familiar with the school and to take an assessment test in English and Mathematics. Alternatively, we can arrange for the assessment to be taken at the candidate's current school or by an Educational Consultant. Skype (or similar) interviews can also be arranged. A reference is required to support their application. For non EU International candidates we are now adopting UKISET, the UK Independent Schools' entry test.

All international students are integrated into lessons and extra curricular activities and are members of either day or boarding Houses.

Specialist EAL teachers are available for students providing one-to-one tuition. Sessions are also available for preparation for IELTS which includes language skills, subject specific learning and cultural awareness.

Although we are aware that communication with international parents is much more straightforward than it once was, it is a condition of entry to Aldenham School that pupils whose parents normally reside outside the UK must have a nominated person to act as guardian whilst the pupil is at school here.

If you or your family are visiting the United Kingdom and would like to visit Aldenham at any time please feel free to contact us. A tour of the facilities and an informal interview can be arranged at your convenience.
