Arthur Dunn Cup - Saturday 3rd December

Dear OAs,

Following a breathtaking, hard fought and very well earned 1-1 draw, after extra-time at Chigwell, the Arthur Dunn Cup 1st round Replay will be held Saturday , 3rd December at 2pm  on the Aldenham School 1st XI pitch.

This will be a very tough but very winnable match and we would love to get as many supporters down as possible. For those of you who were present at the last Dunn match, I can't promise an equalising goal in the last minute by our goalkeeper but I am sure it will be a game worth watching.

Please do feel free to bring your friends and families and for those of you with young children, there is a playground adjacent to the pitches.

The match details again are:

Saturday 3rd December, 2pm kick off, on the School 1st XI pitch

There will be tea in the Three Horseshoes afterwards.

Thank  you in advance for all your support and sincere apologies for the late notice.

Regards and best wishes

Martyn

Annual Dinner - Friday 18th November

Aldenham School - A Foundation for Success, Book Launch - Friday 11th November

Eros Run – Friday 8th July

This year six OAs braved the rain to run the annual Eros Run from Piccadilly to Aldenham. The tradition was started in 1976 in honour of the statue's sculptor, Sir Alfred Gilbert OA (SH1865-72). The first OA home was Jason Kabel in a time of 1.50.23. Jason's sons, both in the prep school, were there to watch him cross the finishing line. Everyone enjoyed a traditional Aldenham breakfast –in some cases much more than the run - before going in to the office for the day.
Left to Right: Dominic Treasure (SHO82-86), Trevor Barton (K71-75), Alan Phillips (M77-82), Jason Kabel (SH86-88), Iain Shaw (SHO81-86). Julian Schlicht (M2009-10) also ran but unfortunately missed the photo.

OA Day – Sunday 26th June 2011
Yet again the sun shone on OA Day. This year the focus was on Paull's House and OAs gathered in the lovely Paull's garden for coffee and a tour of the House. For many it was the first chance to look round since it was refurbished for ‘girls only'. Housemaster, Andy Dean, and his staff of House Tutors laid out a fantastic display of memorabilia in the Centenary Room.

Following the traditional Chapel Service guests gathered for a Reception in School House Garden, where the Headmaster and Neil Sutherland OBE, President of the OA Society spoke and brought everyone up to date with School and OA news. Neil Sutherland took the opportunity to present a leaving gift of a digital radio to Molly Barton, who is leaving the OA Office this summer after 10 years. Molly has no future plans, but wants to have a bit more free time to spend with her family.

After a very enjoyable lunch in the Dining Hall OAs spent the afternoon looking round the School, some visiting the theatre for the first time, some revisiting Paull's House, and others just enjoying the grounds and the occasion.

New Zealand OA Lunch – Sunday 26th June 2011

Left to Right: Jim Black (SHO50-55); Ian Blair (SHO56-56); Peter Dorman (M59-63); Graham Peacock (M57-60); David Sawden (M53-58); Peter Shaw (B52-56); Clive Snow (P55-58); Mike Tombleson (P57-62); James Tubbs (SHE70-74); Mark Calderwood (Gap Student 2009)

At the suggestion of Peter Shaw (B52-56), nine OAs plus former Gap Student, Mark Calderwood, met at The Bay View Wairakei Resort Restaurant, Taupo to celebrate OA Day. Ian Blair reports “We all had a great time and there was much laughter and merriment reminiscing about the old school days! Most of us had never even met before but we all had that common thread, Aldenham, which swept aside any possible barriers.”

Ypres – 6th to 7th May 2011

Sixteen OAs, several accompanied by their wives, and Jackie Wilkie from the OA Office set off on a coach from Aldenham early on Friday 6th May for the Ypres trip. They were joined in Ypres by three more OAs, their wives and former master, Cyril Tyson, who had taught some of them as long ago as 1952.

The focus of the visit was to dedicate a plaque in St George's Memorial Church to Aldenham's war dead, and OAs joined the Headmaster, CCF and Cantabile Choir for a very moving dedication service. 163 OAs lost their lives in the First World War, 111 in the Second World War and one in Aden. After the Dedication Service OAs joined the Headmaster for a reception in the Novotel in central Ypres, before moving to the Menin Gate to witness the daily Last Post Ceremony. Aldenham took centre stage. The CCF paraded their Colours and laid wreaths on behalf of the School, and Neil Sutherland OBE, President of the OA Society, laid a wreath on behalf of members of the Old Aldenhamian Society. The Cantabile Choir sang a psalm and their voices soared beautifully with the wonderful acoustics of the Menin Gate. This really was a memorable occasion which those present will never forget, and a fitting commemoration of those OAs who died almost 100 years ago. In the words of a Radlett visitor, who coincidentally was at the Menin Gate, “We should be proud of Aldenham”. The visit continued on Friday night with dinner in a local restaurant and then on Saturday morning OAs set off on a tour of important First World War sites. We visited the Menin Gate again, and Tyne Cot Cemetery, and in both places OAs were able to identify the names of OAs remembered there. Essex Farm Dressing Station and Cemetery were also on the tour as well as the Langemark German Cemetery. After two very busy days tired OAs returned to Aldenham on Saturday night.
