Senior School Production of Great Expectations a triumph

What a Triumph! The Senior Production of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations had everything from snowstorms to slow motion, humour and humility. With faultless performances from the whole cast and some exceptional talent demonstrated.

The scene was set for audiences before they even entered the Theatre with a selection of cobweb festooned artefacts laid out as a precursor to the exceptional Dickensian atmosphere that spilled out as the doors opened. The scenery was outstanding, complete with spiral stairs, glowing clocks and flickering candles. It even smelled the part.

As the actors took their places on stage it was obvious from the start that we were in for a treat. The action was slick, lines polished and timing perfect. Special mention must go to Joe Jones in the demanding role of Pip, which he carried off with ease. Lydia Chapman's portrayal of Mrs Gargery was scarily good and her husband Joe, played by Anthony Coote, kotowed suitably to her authority, whilst remaining supportive and friendly to their young charge Pip. Jodie Chun was very convincing as the elderly spinster, Miss Havisham. Her frail, shaky voice and tremoring hand were backed up by her bent over frame whenever she rose from her pedastal. Christopher Hudson was hilarious as Herbert Pocket and kept up his caricature throughout, he ably evoked sympathy for the bloody nose that Pip planted on him during their fistycuffs.

Some actors must be congratulated for taking on several roles, all were charming especially the cameos played by Sam Stanbury. The lighting, sound and technical effects, stage crew and front of house all complemented what was an excellent show, beautifully cast and directed to perfection. Well done everyone!
