OA Society Dinner 2011Print this page

Over 80 people attended the Annual OA Society Dinner at Aldenham on Friday 18th November. It was a splendid occasion and a great opportunity to catch up with friends and to forge new acquaintances with fellow OAs, their partners and associates.

The Pre Dinner Talk, held in the Library, was excellently presented by Sir Martin Sweeting OBE (Beevor's 1964 -70). Sir Martin is Director of the Surrey Space Centre and CEO of Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. His talk highlighted the modern world's dependence on satellite technology and how this continues to develop with some astonishing ideas for the future.

An excellent meal was produced by the Brookwood team, which was followed by an address by the President of the OA Society, Neil Sutherland. Neil was splendidly glad in full highland evening dress in response to last year's challenge from David Hayes who was the only one wearing the kilt then. Scottish roots were well represented this time, with Patrick Harding in tartan trews and Andrew Fraser sporting a clan bow tie.

The Headmaster, James Fowler , welcomed everyone back to their school. He went on to talk about the changes taking place, stating that The Wells Centre, a magnificent new building currently under construction, will provide excellent facilities for future pre dinner events. He presented Sir Martin Sweeting with a copy of the recently published History book – Aldenham School – A Foundation for Success and took the opportunity to remind everyone of the chance to collect pre-ordered copies or to purchase one as a memento of their school days. The book was written by Roger Payne (teacher 1971 – 2000), who was also present as a guest of the Society with his wife Dianne.
