The annual Carol Service 2011 at St Albans Abbey

Parents, Governors, OAs, staff and pupils filled the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban for the annual service of carols and lessons. The seventy strong choir and brass and percussion ensemble punctuated the service with wonderful music and led the large congregation in the singing of some traditional carols. Governors, staff and students from the senior and Prep School read a selection of readings from the Bible, telling the Christmas story.

The service began in darkness as the choir sang the Matin Responsory, processing through the nave in candlelight to their stalls. Max Kraitt sang the traditional solo verse of Once in Royal David's City before the Abbey was illuminated during a brass and organ fanfare heralding the first congregational singing of the evening. Director of Music Mr John Wyatt conducted the musicians and choir with his usual impeccable skill, accompanied by Assistant Director of Music Mr Sam Austin who impressed everyone with his playing of the Abbey organ.
