Head of Department: Miss Anna Cushing
Welcome to Classics at Aldenham, a small but rapidly growing department within the community. Each year more and more students are selecting to study either Latin or Classical Civilisation at GCSE and A level; and in some cases they take both subjects side by side. It is easy to see why the department is flourishing as we offer an insight into the Ancient World that covers everything from art, literature, religion and philosophy right down to the language of Latin and its oddities and eccentricities.

The course follows 3 modules and a Controlled Assessment. Currently the department teaches modules on Rome, Sparta and Homer's Odyssey. The Controlled Assessment topics are changed by the board every year and chosen at the discretion of the class teacher. It is expected that the Controlled Assessment will be done after the January exams in Year 11. Pupils receive 3 lessons a week and one prep.
A Level:

The board has changed the way in which Classics is delivered at AS and A2 level. It is now possible for pupils to take modules in an Ancient Language, Ancient History, or Classical Civilisation and to gain a certification in AS/A2 Classics. If all modules are from the Classical Civilisation section then the award is AS/A2 Classical Civilisation. Currently the department teaches The Ancient City (Pompeii, Herculaneum and Ostia) and Greek History through original sources (Sparta) for the AS level. At A2 we teach Greek Art and Architecture and Virgil and the world of the Hero- which compares the Aeneid to the Iliad. Pupils receive 6 lessons a week at AS and 7 lessons a week at A2. These are split across the 2 modules taught in each year.
The numbers of pupils taking Classics at both GCSE and A Level are growing each year. Classes are not set according to ability.
