Michael Hetherington, a former Classics teacher at Aldenham and Housemaster of McGill's House is still missing in South Africa after he failed to return from a day’s walking in the Drakensberg Mountains on Saturday, February 2. In spite of an extensive search for him by the Search and Rescue unit of the Mountain Club of South Africa no trace of him has yet been found.

Michael came straight to Aldenham from his studies at Cambridge in 1959 and spent his whole teaching career here.  He taught a multitude of different subjects including Maths and French, although his real love lay with Latin, Greek and Religious Studies.  He became a housemaster of McGill’s boarding house and was a guide and mentor to countless boys in their time here. His retirement from the school in 1994 in no way signalled a cutting of links with the school since he visited every year, usually as a visiting cricket umpire most recently last summer when he accompanied the Gordonstoun team on a south of England tour.  Throughout his life he loved taking part in expeditions and led many school parties to mountainous regions. We can only imagine that this trip would have been a continuation of a lifelong passion.
