"Art is not a mirror to show the world, but a hammer with which to shape it." Vladimir Mayakovsky. Ever since man first walked he has had an overwhelming desire to decorate and adapt his surroundings. From prehistoric handprints on cave walls to the Mona Lisa, the Sistine Chapel ceiling to an unmade bed, no other animal behaves in this way.
It is this over-riding creative urge and the desire to communicate such feelings that we attempt to explore at Aldenham. The appreciation of beauty whether natural or man-made is an underlying element of a pupil's experiences in Art. Like any means of communication Art has its own grammar and pupils first study these formal, visual elements, such as line, tone, colour etc. and how artists have used these in their work to create a personal, challenging and new outlook on those concerns that drive them. 'I do not seek, I find' Pablo Picasso.
In the Lower School pupils spend half the year investigating 2 dimensional themes: painting; drawing; printmaking, and half the year engaged in 3D studies: sculpture; ceramics etc. Art in the middle and senior school at Aldenham is an organic animal often shaped by the individual interests and concerns of those pupils studying at any one particular time.
"Works of art and literature are not an entertainment or diversion to amuse our leisure, but the one serious and enduring achievement of mankind." Gerald Brenan.
