Music is an integral part of School Life taught by two full time music teachers, Mr. John Wyatt, Director of Music, and Mr George Rose and a teacher of music technology, plus a further 18 specialist visiting teachers. With more than 200 individual music lessons to pupils each week, there is an allowance of time inside and outside the curriculum for regular lessons and rehearsals. Pupils are regularly involved with County and National groups and take part in concerts outside school. Recent Music tours have gone to Holland, Germany and France.
Individual lessons are given on the Piano, Organ, Guitar, Saxophone, Drum Kit, Orchestral Percussion, Electronic Keyboard and all the usual orchestral instruments by specialist teachers. Singing tuition is also available. A limited number of new pupils are offered music lessons on a trial basis at a reduced fee to encourage the playing of an orchestral instrument.
In the first three years, all pupils do music in the classroom and pupils are encouraged to take up an instrument of their choice.
Every year, candidates take GCSE and A Level music/music technology. GCSE classes average 10 candidates, A level groups are smaller. The department is furnished with computers, including 23 iMacs and upgraded music technology equipment including a recording studio.
