Introduction Head of Department: Mrs Adèle Venter
The Languages Department offers French, German and Spanish. Native speakers can also gain qualifications in their mother tongue. There are seven teachers in the department, most of whom teach two or more languages. In Year Seven, students are offered a taster course in German, French and Spanish which allows them to commit to their language choice for GCSE by Christmas of their first year. All students study a language at GCSE, and the Department follows the AQA specifications for both the GCSE and A-Level courses. Our objective is to foster true enjoyment in language learning with the principal aim of promoting communicative proficiency as well as a thorough understanding of the idiom of the target language. This is achieved by means of carefully structured schemes of work, weekly access for all year groups to our digital laboratory, weekly conversational sessions, and the use of a variety of authentic audio-visual and written texts. The library subscribes to a range of journals and magazines which form part of our teaching. Pupils and parents are invited to peruse our VLE where resources, blogs and language news are available.
The Department is committed to cultural exchanges and offers trips and work experience opportunities to the major cities and sites of Europe. We also have partner schools in Berlin and in Cannes. The Department organises excursions to language conferences, London's museums, the British Library and language institutes.
