English - An introduction Head of English & Media Studies: Mr Chris Jenkins
The main aims of the English Department are to ensure all pupils enjoy the subject whilst developing the skills they require to become confident and competent users of English. To achieve these aims the department uses a syllabus that is linked to the National Curriculum requirements, yet with a flexibility to expand beyond them.
The syllabus outlines what pupils will cover, whilst there is differentiation which enables all pupils to meet their full potential. Emphasis is placed on the key skills of accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar to enable pupils to have confidence when writing. Pupils are encouraged to explore different genres in their writing, including personal writing, newspaper articles, parody and story telling. These skills are developed and supported through exposure to a wide range of texts. This includes pre and post Twentieth Century literature, an introduction to Shakespeare and Chaucer, poetry, and a variety of non-literature and reading texts. Private reading is actively encouraged to maintain pupils’ enthusiasm for literature and support their literacy skills. Speaking and listening skills are fundamental to communicating, and pupils learn to present their ideas persuasively and logically. Group work and role play enables pupils to gain confidence in their verbal skills as well as allowing the exchange of ideas.
Pupils have a clear focus on their learning through the structured syllabus, small class sizes and dedicated staff. There is regular monitoring of all pupils to ensure every individual’s needs are addressed. English is a fundamentally important subject and this fact is recognised and upheld at Aldenham School.
