A splendid concert was held in the Chapel on 6th March in aid of our Ripple Africa appeal featuring performances by a number of our talented musicians alongside visiting Portuguese counter-tenor, Luís Peças and organist, João Santos on their UK debut tour. The two visitors gave a recital of Baroque and Spanish songs and the Aldenham music department injected its own brand of eclecticism to the proceedings, making it a night to remember.
The choir sang excellently under Mr Wyatt, with a repertoire ranging from 16th century hymns to Rogers and Hammerstein classics. However, it was their performance of the “Kyrie” from Faure's Messe Basse which really put the choir on the map. The newly-formed Cantabile continue to go from strength to strength under the guidance of Mr Rose, and their performance of Howells' Hymn for St Cecilia (not an easy piece!) was worthy of considerable praise.
As ever, Aldenham was proud to promote some soloists of its own. April Koyejo sang from Massenet's Manon to rapturous applause, and Carl Rennie played the opening movement of Saint-Saens' Clarinet Sonata with his usual precision and fire. Special mention should go to Amy Bexon and Alice Erman for their fantastic efforts in the Baroque style, singing “Laudamus Te” from Vivaldi's Gloria; also to Alice for her beautiful rendition of Betty Roe's The Lass from the Low Countree.
